The 1931 acquisition by Rolls-Royce of its largest competitor in the luxury car market certainly saved Bentley Motors Ltd from oblivion. Founded in 1919 by engineer W.O. Bentley, the victories obtained between 1924 and 1930 at Le Mans gave great prestige to the brand, which could not overcome the Great Depression of 1929. From 1949 to 2002, Bentleys would continue to share the same production line as their Rolls-Royce counterparts at the new Crewe plant in Cheshire, differing only in their radiator grilles and brand emblems.

The Bentley 3.5 was the first model to appear after the takeover and was part, along with the Phantom II and 20/25 Hp models, of the commonly known as ‘Derbys’, as they were manufactured at the Derbyshire plant. Improvements introduced from the Rolls-Royce 20/25 Hp chassis gave a faster and quieter car, which they named ‘Silent Sports Car’. This model and its successor, the Bentley 4 ¼ litre, flourished under the ownership of famous drivers and the ‘Bentley Boys’, a group of British motoring enthusiasts who promoted the brand among social elites.
