1898 Allen Runabout “Horseless Carriage”
The automobile pioneers from the late 19th century are well represented by this rare specimen. Its carriage structure, to which an engine is attached, allows the ‘Horseless Carriages of America’ insignia to be displayed on its front. Only 10 years earlier, the internal explosion engine creator’s wife, Bertha Benz, managed to complete for the first time a 106 km journey aboard a tricycle fitted with a 2,5 horsepower engine equipped with 5 litres of gasoline
The unit in the collection is equipped with a single cylinder that transmits power to the rear wheels via chains and, as a curiosity, has no clutch and a lever has replaced the steering wheel
