En los tempranos a\u00f1os en los que la producci\u00f3n en serie no exist\u00eda, el revestimiento de los coches impulsados por caballos eran confiados a renombrados maestros carroceros que, junto a carpinteros, herreros, pintores y ebanistas, proporcionaban una gran variedad de modelos adaptados a cada necesidad y al gusto de sus compradores.<br \/>\nLa sustituci\u00f3n de la m\u00e1quina de vapor por el motor de combusti\u00f3n facilit\u00f3 la aparici\u00f3n del primer autom\u00f3vil autopropulsado. Los primeros veh\u00edculos que fueron dotados de chasis y motor carec\u00edan de una carrocer\u00eda propia, raz\u00f3n por la que fueron estos milenarios artesanos los encargados de instalar los nuevos motores en los coches ya existentes. En los talleres de carrocer\u00eda se alternaba la producci\u00f3n de coches de tracci\u00f3n animal con los propulsados a motor aplicando incluso las mismas t\u00e9cnicas.<br \/>\nLos chasis independientes eran inicialmente en madera. Los primeros coches \u201csin caballos\u201d tomaron prestada la arquitectura de los carruajes. Conservan las l\u00edneas, los modelos, los materiales e incluso los mismos nombres: berlina (cuatro puertas), coup\u00e9 (techo r\u00edgido, dos puertas), tilbury o roadster (dos puertas, dos plazas, sin capota), tourer (versi\u00f3n cuatro plazas del roadster), landaulette (descapotable parte trasera), sedanca (descapotable secci\u00f3n delantera), cabriolet (descapotable) o limusina (berlina de seis ventanas).<br \/>\nA lo largo de los a\u00f1os veinte las carrocer\u00edas abiertas (torpedos) o cerradas se van alejando del estilo de los coches de caballos, aunque conservan los nombres. Los cap\u00f3s se alargan, las l\u00edneas se redondean y el metal sustituye a la madera. La evoluci\u00f3n t\u00e9cnica y la exigencia de seguridad condicionar\u00eda la creaci\u00f3n de nuevos modelos.<br \/>\nEn la d\u00e9cada de los treinta se abandona la construcci\u00f3n del chasis independiente con la aparici\u00f3n de las denominadas carrocer\u00edas monocasco.
