Por primera vez en su historia, un Rolls-Royce abandona el dise\u00f1o de un chasis separado para presentar el primer bastidor monocasco. Esta nueva configuraci\u00f3n permitir\u00eda a los dise\u00f1adores presentar una l\u00ednea de techo m\u00e1s baja y ganar m\u00e1s espacio en el habit\u00e1culo. Tambi\u00e9n es el primero en ser equipado con cuatro ruedas independientes y en recibir frenos de disco. Constituyen a su vez importantes innovaciones la introducci\u00f3n de un nuevo sistema hidr\u00e1ulico de suspensi\u00f3n y frenos, patentado por Citro\u00ebn, y la dotaci\u00f3n de una direcci\u00f3n asistida.<\/p>\n

Desde 1907 Rolls-Royce se hab\u00eda posicionado como el mejor coche de lujo del mundo, pero despu\u00e9s de cincuenta a\u00f1os la tradici\u00f3n y la fama ya no val\u00edan. Su resistencia a innovar y adoptar nuevas tecnolog\u00edas le llevaron a estar por detr\u00e1s de otras marcas de lujo. Frente a las formas conservadoras del modelo precedente, el Silver Cloud III, el Silver Shadow aparec\u00eda como un coche moderno y contempor\u00e1neo, con una silueta m\u00e1s baja y angulosa y prescindiendo de las alas del modelo precedente, lo que algunos consideraron como una banalizaci\u00f3n del estilo de la casa. Sin embargo, lo que puede ser tomado como una revoluci\u00f3n en la casa Rolls-Royce, no representa en realidad sino la tard\u00eda actualizaci\u00f3n de unas t\u00e9cnicas largamente utilizadas por los dem\u00e1s constructores, lo que revela la postura conservadora de la compa\u00f1\u00eda.<\/p>\n

Este cambio de imagen hizo que Rolls-Royce acrecentara su popularidad y que fuera muy cotizado por artistas, m\u00fasicos y estrellas de cine, entre los que se contaron el propio Andy Warhol. Es revelador de la nueva etapa que el coche es destinado a ser conducido por su propietario y no por su chofer. En quince a\u00f1os de producci\u00f3n fueron vendidas un total de 30.000 unidades, siendo el modelo de Rolls-Royce m\u00e1s vendido de la historia, algo que no merm\u00f3 en absoluto el incomparable acabado del veh\u00edculo.<\/p>\n

Una versi\u00f3n de chasis largo hace su aparici\u00f3n en 1969 quedando \u00e9sta configurada para los Silver Shadow posteriores. La variante Cabriolet fue comercializada bajo el nombre de Corniche a partir de 1971. En 1977 el modelo ser\u00e1 denominado Silver Shadow II en reconocimiento a cambios importantes tales como la direcci\u00f3n de cremallera y la modificaci\u00f3n de la suspensi\u00f3n. La sucesi\u00f3n llegar\u00e1 con el modelo Silver Spirit.<\/p>\n
