The fifteen Rolls-Royce on show in this room have been arranged to show the evolution of the body and engine over a period of forty years. At the front is a selection of Rolls-Royce 20 HPs –the so-called “Baby Rolls”– launched in 1922. Changes to the chassis and the 20 HP engine paved the way for the 20/25 HP and 25/30 HP models, culminating in the elegant Phantom series, on show in a separate room.

The models from the 1920s feature the early double-R motif on the radiator in red letters. In 1933 it was changed to black – more for reasons of aesthetics and image than as a mark of respect to Sir Henry Royce who died that same year. Another distinctive feature of the so-called “Twenties” is the characteristic horizontal arrangement of the radiator shutters, later changed to vertical for aesthetic reasons.

This room contains the only Bentley in the collection. The two Silver Wraiths both have a small light fitted above the windscreen, an indication that they were once owned by the Queen of England.

Other models on show also reflect the firm’s tradition of baptising their cars with ethereal names: Silver Dawn, Silver Cloud and the pioneer Silver Ghost.
