As you walk across the park towards the next exhibition room, you will see a building which plays an essential role in keeping the collection running properly. Here we carry out all the essential repair and maintenance work on the cars, which are regularly taken out for a spin within the walls, in the area surrounding the tower. It is demanding work and requires an expert hand and painstaking attention to detail.

Room 2 houses two classic closed-body models from the 1930s and 1940s, when car outlines were becoming more streamlined. With separately-built chassis becoming the norm, car bodies became lighter and more rounded.

Sports cars left their mark in the form of stylish design and powerful mechanics. Legendary models from the early 1950s –with German Porsches, Mercedes and BMWs vying against the English MG and Austin Healey convertibles– ushered in an age of major technical development. They are offset by an imposing Cadillac from the 1970s.

An unexpected addition to this area is a magnificent fire engine made by the British firm “Merryweather”, and originally used in the fire station at Seaford in Sussex. After it was withdrawn from service it became a regular participant in the famous London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.
